How to Calculate Square Footage and Overage for Your Hardscape Project

There is one mistake that shows up on hardscape projects more than any other — and it has nothing to do with choosing the wrong stone or hiring the wrong installer. It is simply this: not ordering enough material.

Running short mid-installation is one of the most expensive problems in any stone project. A second delivery costs money. A gap in your timeline costs money. And if the replacement material comes from a different production batch — which is common with natural stone — the color match may be off enough to be visible forever.

The solution is straightforward: learn to calculate your square footage accurately and apply the right overage percentage before you place your order. This guide walks you through the entire process, step by step, for every common hardscape application.


Why Overage Matters More With Natural Stone

With manufactured materials like porcelain or concrete pavers, ordering extra is still recommended but less critical — most manufacturers produce consistent inventory runs and a reorder from the same product line will likely match.

With natural stone — travertine, marble, limestone, basalt — every quarry batch has its own unique color range. Stone quarried and processed six months apart can look noticeably different side by side, even from the same quarry and the same product line.

This means your overage is not just a buffer against breakage and cuts — it is your insurance policy against a color mismatch that cannot be fixed after installation.

The Standard Overage Rules

Before we get into the calculations, here are the overage percentages you should apply for different project types:

When in doubt, round up to the higher end. The cost of one extra pallet is always less than the cost of a second order, a delivery fee, and a potential color mismatch.


Step-by-Step: How to Calculate Your Square Footage

Simple Rectangle or Square

This is the straightforward case. Measure the length and width of your space in feet and multiply:

Length × Width = Square Footage

Example: A patio that is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide: 20 × 15 = 300 square feet

Add 10% overage: 300 × 1.10 = 330 square feet to order


L-Shaped Areas

Break the L-shape into two separate rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.

Example:

  • Rectangle A: 20 × 12 = 240 sq ft
  • Rectangle B: 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft
  • Total: 320 square feet

Add 12% overage: 320 × 1.12 = 358 square feet to order


Pool Decks

Pool decks require a slightly more involved calculation because you need to subtract the pool water area and account for coping cuts along the pool edge.

Step 1 — Calculate the total area including the pool: Overall length × Overall width = Total area

Step 2 — Calculate the pool water surface area: Pool length × Pool width = Pool area (for rectangular pools)

Step 3 — Subtract the pool area from the total: Total area − Pool area = Net deck area

Step 4 — Add 15% overage for edge cuts: Net deck area × 1.15 = Total to order

Example:

  • Overall space: 40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft
  • Pool water surface: 30 × 15 = 450 sq ft
  • Net deck area: 1,200 − 450 = 750 sq ft
  • With 15% overage: 750 × 1.15 = 862 square feet to order

Don't forget to calculate your pool coping separately — coping is measured in linear feet, not square feet. Measure the perimeter of the pool and add 10% for cuts at corners and radius pieces.


French Pattern Layouts

French pattern requires special attention because the four sizes — 8×8, 8×16, 16×16, and 16×24 — must maintain their mathematical ratio throughout the installation. You cannot substitute one size for another when you run short.

Calculate your square footage using the standard method, then apply a minimum 15% overage, and round up to the nearest full pallet.

Example:

  • Patio area: 500 sq ft
  • With 15% overage: 500 × 1.15 = 575 sq ft
  • Round up to the nearest full pallet coverage

Driveways and Walkways

Driveways and walkways follow the same basic formula but require extra attention to:

  • Radius corners — curved corners require diagonal cuts that generate significant waste
  • Tapered sections — if your driveway widens or narrows, break it into trapezoid sections
  • Apron cuts — where the driveway meets the street, cuts are often required at an angle

For a standard straight driveway: Length × Width + 10% overage For a driveway with radius corners or curves: Length × Width + 15–20% overage

Wall Cladding and Ledger Stone

Wall cladding and ledger/splitface applications are measured in square feet of vertical surface area.

Height × Width = Square Footage per wall section

For multiple wall sections, calculate each separately and add together. Subtract any openings like windows or doors.

Add 10–15% overage for cuts at corners, around outlets, and at the top and bottom courses.

Important note for wall applications: outside corners require either mitered pieces or corner pieces — these need to be specified separately and are not included in standard wall cladding square footage calculations. Ask our team about corner piece requirements when you contact us.


Calculating Linear Feet for Pool Coping

Pool coping is sold and measured differently from deck pavers — by the linear foot of pool perimeter rather than by square footage.

Step 1 — Measure the full perimeter of your pool in feet For a rectangular pool: (Length + Width) × 2 = Perimeter linear feet For a freeform pool: measure along the actual edge with a measuring tape or wheel

Step 2 — Add 10% for cuts at corners and radius sections

Step 3 — Divide by the length of your chosen coping piece to get approximate piece count

Example for a rectangular 30×15 pool:

  • Perimeter: (30 + 15) × 2 = 90 linear feet
  • With 10% overage: 90 × 1.10 = 99 linear feet to order

  • French pattern: minimum 15% and full pallet bundles

A Note on Ordering Everything at Once

This point deserves its own emphasis: order all your material in a single purchase whenever possible.

Natural stone from the same order ships from the same quarry batch. The color consistency across your entire installation will be as close to perfect as natural variation allows. Split orders — even weeks apart — can produce visible color differences that no amount of sealing or finishing can correct.

If budget requires splitting the order, at minimum order all the material for a single continuous surface (pool deck, patio, or driveway) in one purchase. Never split an order mid-surface.
