12x12 Pavers: One Square Foot Per Piece, Grid Layouts
The 12x12 is the easiest paver to estimate: one piece, one square foot, no conversion. It is also the size crews reach for when a job needs a true grid, a checkerboard of two colors, or a tight module that fits narrow strips like a pool-equipment pad, a hot-tub surround or the landing at the bottom of a stair. Everything in this collection is 1-1/4" thick, so plan on pedestrian use over a compacted base or a mortar bed on concrete, not driveways.
Where the square format earns its place
On a pool deck, 12x12 stack bond with a matching row of 12x12 pool coping gives an uninterrupted grid from the water's edge outward. In a courtyard it works as the field between planting beds, or rotated 45 degrees for a diamond set. Alternating Tundra Grey and a white marble in a checkerboard is a look that only reads correctly in a square module. If you want a rectangle in the same 12" module, the 12x24 paver lays out with the same joints and can be mixed in for a two-piece modular pattern.
Finishes follow the material: tumbled on travertine and limestone, leather or sandblasted on marble. Small pieces mean more joints per square foot, so the joint sand or grout color affects the finished look more here than it does with slabs.
