Pick 16x24 when the cap has to do more than trim the edge. Sixteen inches of depth covers a wide beam with a generous overhang, forms a seating ledge on a raised spa wall, or caps a sun shelf step where people sit with their feet in the water. Each piece is still 2 linear feet along the pool, so the count matches 12x24 and 14x24 coping; only the depth and the weight change.

Why this size lays out so cleanly

16x24 is also a stock paver size, which is the real advantage. Run 16x24 pavers behind a 16x24 cap and the first deck course is the same module as the coping: joints align on both axes, and the border reads as part of the field rather than a separate strip. The same piece is one of the four units in a French pattern set, so the coping also ties in with a patterned deck. Both 1-1/4" and 2" thicknesses are here, evenly split between bullnose and eased edge. Does 16x24 coping line up with 16x24 pavers?

Yes, that is the main reason to choose it. When the first paver course behind the coping is 16x24 laid the same direction, every joint carries straight through from cap to field. Order both in the same thickness so the surfaces sit flush.

Is 16 inches too deep for a curved pool?

On a tight radius, yes. A 16 inch deep, 24 inch long piece has corners that will project past a curve of a few feet. Use 16x24 on straight runs, wide sweeps, spa walls and steps, and switch to 6x12 or 4x9 coping for the tight sections.
